OstaBudin Restaurant in Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland has some of the most amazing food I have ever tasted. Before my trip, I was told by quite a few people that the food is delicious, mostly Michelin star worthy, and a bit pricey. On my first night in Reykjavik, I got to experience this amazing food culture at OstaBudin. If you are visiting Iceland this restaurant is a MUST. You have to eat there at least once on your trip. We loved it so much that we ate there on our first and last night in Reykjavik. I would have eaten there for almost every meal. Not only is there a nice homey feel to the restaurant, the staff is also amazing. The service throughout the meal was exceptional, never rushed, but also attentive, really nicely managed and friendly. 

This restaurant is small and cozy but accommodates meat-lovers, veggies, and seafood fiends alike. The meal service starts with a basket of freshly baked bread and homemade butter. I love my bread and butter, but I usually do not fill up on bread and butter before a meal, but I made a huge exception at this establishment. Their bread and butter are so good that we not only had 1 basket of bread before dinner, we had 4! For starters, we decided to be adventurous and try whale. I wouldn’t normally, but seeing as I was in Iceland I decided to have a bite of the grilled minke whale. I thought it was ok, but I found out quickly I am not a fan of whale. The dish was presented beautifully and could be delicious to some, but it just wasn’t my favorite. 

For my main dish, I went with a seafood choice and decided to get the salted cod. This dish was cooked to perfection. The fish was beautifully cooked and filled with flavor. Also, the portion was bigger than I expected. I got through most of it but due to the excessive amount of bread before dinner, I didn’t finish my dish, and I was trying to save room for dessert. 

Lastly, for dessert, I had the cheesecake and it was to die for. Between all my family members we ordered every dessert on the menu, but my personal favorite was the cheesecake. From the first bite, you could tell that it was completely homemade, from the crust the toppings. You cannot skip dessert here. I highly urge everyone to save room for dessert because everything on the menu was delicious, but you the cheesecake was divine! 

I wouldn’t call this restaurant fine dining, but it was well worth the money. Fair warning, most restaurants in Iceland are pricey, especially if you have wine/alcohol with dinner. OstaBudin was fairly priced and gave you substantial portion sizes. If you are looking for a great Icelandic meal then you have got to try them out. They do not take reservations after 6 pm, so for dinner service it is first come, first serve. We were seated within 30minutes of arrival, but don’t worry it is well worth the wait.
