Sorry for being a bit MIA guys, but I am back with a review of my first-time experience Van Arthur’s Master Florist Class! If you follow me on Instagram, you will probably know that I am a big fan of flowers. Come on, who doesn’t love a gorgeous bouquet?! So when Van Arthur Florist invited me to a masterclass I was over the moon with excitement to try something new and be around gorgeous flowers!
On a lovely May afternoon, I popped down to the Van Arthur shop in the arcade behind Liverpool station and immediately noticed how beautiful the window was. It had been decorated for the class and there were plenty of snacks and prosecco waiting for all the influencers as we arrived. Let’s just say the shop window was very Instagrammable and looked like there was a beautiful garden right in the middle of buy Liverpool street!
The class started with the basic explanation of flower and how to make your own bouquet. Some of the things I learned were:
- Flower food doesn’t actually feed the flowers or help them grow, the only purpose is to clean the water that the flowers will go in. So if you don’t have any you can use a crushed up aspirin or a drop of bleach.
- When you put your flowers into the vase make sure the tips of the stems are cut at an angle and that there are no leaves touching the water as this will make the water dirty and kill your flowers off quickly.
- Flowers are either created for longevity or smell. So when you buy roses from a florist, likely they will not smell like the roses in your garden because they were made to last instead of smell.
Once we learned these basics we were off to start to make our own bouquets. We were given some flowers and foliage to start to construct our bouquets. I have to admit my first attempt was horrible and after a bit of guidance from the Van Arthur team I was able to create a beautiful bouquet. The main takeaway I can give as advice is pick one flower as your main centerpiece and as you keep adding other flowers and foliage make sure you keep going to the left and keep turning the bouquet around to the left as you add more. This will give you nice even balance and continue to highlight the main centerpiece flower.
After I finished my bouquet we tied them off and cut off the bottom of the stems. Fun fact, the bouquet should be able to stand up by itself. If it can do that then it is a good bouquet! By the end of the night, we all left with our beautiful bouquets and learned that making the perfect bouquet is a lot harder than it looks!
I had such a fun night and cannot wait to return for another class.
